A heartbreaking incident has come to light where a teenage girl succumbed to fatal neglect. Robyn, a 13-year-old girl from Wishaw, Scotland, was found dead while watching the TV quiz show Tipping Point. Her mother, Sharon Goldie, aged 49, left her daughter at home to go out drinking, believing that her symptoms were being exaggerated.

The inquiry into Robyn’s death revealed shocking details that have led to serious public concerns.

The Tragic Day

On that fateful day, Robyn was suffering from what her mother referred to as a ‘stomach bug.’ Despite her deteriorating condition, Sharon Goldie refused to let her daughter go to the hospital. Upon returning, she found Robyn unresponsive on the sofa, having succumbed to the fatal combination of peritonitis and a perforated duodenal ulcer.

Goldie and a friend, Jim Duffy, were drinking outside the home when Duffy found Robyn not breathing. The tragic event was brought to light during a fatal accident inquiry at Hamilton Sheriff Court in South Lanarkshire.

A Pattern of Neglect

In its findings, the inquiry revealed that Sharon Goldie had consistently neglected her daughter. She refused to provide Robyn with adequate food, clothing, or heating. Goldie also allowed her daughter to smoke cannabis and drink alcohol. The home environment was rife with unhygienic conditions including cat urine and faeces, leading to Robyn developing fleas.

Goldie was sentenced to three years and six months in prison for her actions. The sentencing took place in 2020, two years after Robyn’s death.

A History of Abuse

The inquiry also revealed that Goldie had coerced Robyn into silence regarding an alleged rape by a 14-year-old boy. Goldie claimed Robyn was ‘boasting’ about the incident and discouraged her from reporting it. The fear of doctors examining her and the subsequent court procedures were cited as reasons.

This chain of apathy, neglect, and maltreatment has raised serious concerns and has led to the Lord Advocate of Scotland, Dorothy Bain KC, ruling that the circumstances required a public inquiry.

Public Backlash and Ongoing Inquiry

The public reaction has been of outrage and sorrow. Many are questioning how such gross negligence could have gone unnoticed for so long. The ongoing inquiry is being spearheaded by Sheriff Linda Nicolson and aims to delve deeper into the lapses and failures that led to Robyn’s tragic death.

The case has ignited a crucial conversation about child protection laws in Scotland and has people calling for stricter measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Preventative Measures

Experts claim that the system needs to be more vigilant and stringent when it comes to child welfare. There are growing calls for reforms in the way social services monitor and handle cases of child neglect and abuse.

As the inquiry continues, it raises the question of how many more children are suffering in silence. The tragic death of Robyn should be a wake-up call for society to take child neglect and maltreatment seriously and act promptly to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
