Thousands of anti-racism protesters have gathered in Glasgow for a rally organized in response to the recent rioting and disorder in England. Meanwhile, a smaller group of anti-immigration demonstrators also assembled in front of the war memorial in George Square.
Charged Atmosphere as Protests Unfold
The atmosphere was charged as thousands of protesters advocating for anti-racism and a fewer number of anti-immigration demonstrators came together in Glasgow. Police briefly drew their batons, instructing the crowd to step back as tensions heightened, resulting in the arrest of two individuals.
According to a BBC reporter on the scene, an estimated two to three thousand people partook in the anti-racism rally at George Square, while the opposing demonstration amassed about 350 individuals. The police had set up barriers to segregate the two opposing groups of demonstrators.
At one moment, a man wielding what appeared to be two sticks charged towards the square, only to be swiftly apprehended by the police and ushered into a police van. Another man ran through the anti-immigration side, making provocative comments, and was subsequently pursued. Officers tackled a different individual to the ground during the chaos.
Masked Group Causes Stir
A group of masked men, thought to be from the Green Brigade—a faction of Celtic fans—tried to join the anti-racism demonstrators but were redirected by the police. Far-right activists then rushed to confront them, singing
