Severn Beach, once hailed as the ‘Blackpool of the South West’, was a bustling holiday destination between the 1930s and 1960s. Located just north of Bristol, this coastal village was famed for its range of attractions and charm, drawing visitors from far and wide.

The Rise and Fall of Severn Beach

During its prime, Severn Beach boasted a variety of entertainment options that included an open-air swimming pool, the Blue Lagoon, a cinema, casino, and even a strip club. These attractions made it a key holiday spot in the South West of England.

Fast forward to recent decades, and the village has largely transformed into a quiet residential area, more known for its proximity to the Severn Crossing than its historic charm. However, among the whispers of its former glory lies an amusement park that has since faded from memory.

Located on Beach Road, the Just As You Are tea cottage currently occupies a site that was once known as Tubbies, a mini amusement park that was a hit among locals and visitors alike.

Tubbies Amusement Park: A Forgotten Gem

Tubbies was a delightful place for families, filled with coin-operated rides, fruit machines, and a popular burger bar. Kids would ride mechanical horses, race on mini cars, and enjoy various amusements spread across the park.

The amusement park thrived for years until around 2006 when the owner passed away. It led to the property being listed for sale for a modest sum of £65,000. The once lively park was left abandoned, with rides and equipment falling into disrepair over the years.

By 2015, Tubbies remained untouched, with rusted rides and broken-down vending machines creating a spooky vibe. Interest in buying the site came from multiple parties, yet it took another decade for significant changes to happen.

The Transformation of Severn Beach

In 2016, the park saw some activity as the old machines were removed and the land was slightly cleaned up. By September 2018, the Just As You Are tea cottage opened up, marking the end of Tubbies’ era.

Today, Tubbies is a faint memory, overshadowed by other historic attractions like the lido and mid-1900s shops that once attracted throngs of people to Severn Beach. Despite its fading presence, Tubbies holds a special place in the heart of those who remember it.

Severn Beach now stands as a quiet village yet to fully embrace its past glory. The story of Tubbies serves as a reminder of the ever-changing landscape and the nostalgic moments frozen in time.
