“Honestly, I had a good summer,” he told Sky Sports in an interview following the dominant win. “I had a long time to stay with myself, try to think positive because as you know it’s my last year at the club. I just want to enjoy it, I don’t want to think about it but I feel free to play football, we will see next year.”

He added, “To be fair, I was coming to the game and I said: ‘It could be my last time.’ The club has not talked to me yet so I will play my last season and see at the end of the season.” The 32-year-old, like teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, sees his current contract expire next summer.

“Every week [being at my best] is the most important thing. Just take one day at a time and just be grateful to be here and that is it.”

In the meantime, Salah has been back in his native country for two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with the first of those against Cape Verde. Though he was unable to contribute in front of goal, Egypt won 3-0 with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush, who has been linked with a transfer to Liverpool, on target.

Following the win, Salah posted a number of photos to his Instagram with it clear the Liverpool superstar is enjoying the September international break.

Egypt face Botswana in another major tournament qualifier next Tuesday before Salah then returns to Merseyside for Liverpool’s home clash against Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.
