Leeds residents have been left perplexed by an unpleasant smell that has spread across the city. The stench, noticeable on Friday, September 6, led to widespread speculation about its origin.
Residents React to the Unpleasant Smell
Social media platforms buzzed with complaints as people voiced their discomfort and confusion. Many described the smell as similar to feces, leading some to guess that the source might be local street drains.
In the LeedsPlace Facebook group, Malcolm Chigaru inquired, “Anyone know why it stinks everywhere?” His post garnered over 60 comments from fellow residents who had also noticed the foul odor.
Bradley Lomas shared, “Noticed that today myself in LS15,” and Kim Ridgway-Bates commented, “Probably street drains. Everywhere outside smelled of dog**** earlier.”
Jenny Wren wrote, “Omg literally … poo everywhere .. LS18, 6 and 17,” while Melanie Sutton remarked, “I was upstairs thought the dog had a poo in the kitchen.” Angela Pauline Liebrand-Eaton added, “I smell in Cross Gates it’s terrible.”
Speculations About the Source of the Smell
While some residents speculated more humorously, others suggested more plausible explanations, such as farmers’ muck spreading. Carl Haywood theorized, “End of harvest so turning the earth and fertiliser on the ground so shit stinks,” while Scott Hanson agreed, “Smells like muck spreading to me in the air.”
Sue Clarke also noticed the odor, stating, “I’ve noticed it today too both at work 7.5 miles away and at home in the garden. It smells like manure.”
The mystery remains unsolved, but the general consensus appears to support the theory that agricultural activities are the cause. Residents continue to express their discomfort as they wait for the smell to dissipate.
