After the thrilling conclusion of the 2023/24 season, Manchester United made the difficult decision to release several players. Raphael Varane

The departure of Raphael Varane stood out among the list of exits from Old Trafford. Following three memorable seasons with 95 appearances in Manchester United colors, Varane moved to Italian side Como in late July, signing a two-year contract. Unfortunately, his time at Como has seen a challenging start, as a knee injury forced him off just 23 minutes into his debut in a Coppa Italia first-round defeat to Sampdoria. Subsequently, Varane has been removed from Como’s Serie A squad list.

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial followed Varane out of Old Trafford after a season marred by injuries, limiting him to just 19 appearances. As a consequence, Martial remains a free agent, waiting to join his next club. Reports link him with several European teams, including Galatasaray and AEK Athens. However, the latest buzz suggests he might be nearing a move to Brazilian outfit Flamengo.

Brandon Williams

Brandon Williams, who spent the previous season on loan at Ipswich Town, found himself on the list of released players as well. Despite his versatility in playing both right-back and left-back positions, Williams made only 17 appearances for Ipswich due to injuries and illnesses. He is currently a free agent, with several Championship clubs expressing interest in signing him.

Charlie McNeill

Young striker Charlie McNeill saw an underwhelming loan spell at Stevenage come to an end as Manchester United decided to release him. He quickly found a new home with Sheffield Wednesday, signing a three-year contract in July. McNeill made a sensational start to his career with the Owls, scoring twice on his debut in a 2-1 Carabao Cup first-round victory over Hull City. His first goal came just 25 seconds into the match. Though he’s yet to make his league debut for the Yorkshire club, he has also featured in a Carabao Cup second-round match against Grimsby Town.

Marcus Lawrence

Marcus Lawrence, a 19-year-old right-back, is still on the lookout for his next club after being released by Manchester United. He had a handful of appearances for the U-18 team but never broke into the first team.

Kie Plumley

Kie Plumley, a young goalkeeper, joined Isthmian League South Central Division club Hartley Wintney shortly after his release. Hartley Wintney plays in the eighth tier of English football. Plumley had joined United in September of the previous year on a free transfer after being released by Oxford United, making a single appearance for United’s U-21s last season.

Tom Huddlestone

Veteran player-coach Tom Huddlestone also concluded his stint with Manchester United. Known for providing invaluable support and guidance to young players, Huddlestone transitioned to a first-team coaching role at League One side Wigan Athletic in July. Currently, he is assisting England’s U-21s during the ongoing international break.
