Why the Cardiff Refill Return Cup Scheme is Important

The United Kingdom sees an estimated usage of 2.5 billion takeaway coffee cups every year, 99% of which are not recycled. This staggering amount contributes massively to environmental waste. Cardiff aims to tackle this issue head-on by providing a sustainable solution.

Collaborating with the environmental charity City to Sea, FOR Cardiff is launching this innovative project, making it the first of its kind in Wales. Through this scheme, coffee aficionados in Cardiff can borrow a reusable coffee cup, return it, and get a discount at their favorite coffee shops.

How the Cardiff Refill Return Cup Scheme Works

The scheme involves several steps to make it easy for both coffee shops and customers. Cafés and coffee shops will sign up for the scheme and receive reusable cups to distribute to customers.

The customer simply needs to download the Refill app, register, and scan a QR code when they receive their coffee in a reusable cup. They have two weeks to return the cup. Provided the cup is returned within the stipulated time, there is no charge for using the scheme. The retailer will then wash and reuse the cup for another customer.

Participating venues like Waterloo Tea, Pettigrew Bakeries, Da Coffee, and Bird & Blend Tea have committed to offering a minimum 15p discount for every coffee order made using the Refill Return Cup.

Carolyn Brownell, executive director at FOR Cardiff, is optimistic that residents will embrace the scheme, helping to prevent up to 30,000 single-use cups from ending up as waste. The project has secured £90,000 funding from the UK government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, highlighting its significance and potential impact.
