Bristol Animal Rescue Centre (Bristol ARC) is currently grappling with rising operational costs and an increase in the number of animals under their care. The center is experiencing significant financial strain, particularly with water bills which amount to a staggering £450 per month.

Challenges Faced by Bristol ARC

Rosie El-Tibi, Head of Fundraising at Bristol ARC, expressed the challenge they face in maintaining operations. “The main challenge we are facing is that our costs are increasing all the time, even the most basic things like water. We use an incredible amount of water here keeping the kennels clean,” Rosie explained. This significant expense is likened to the annual water cost for an average household, but paid monthly by the center.

“That’s the really scary part, things we can’t control,” she added. The need to use sufficient water to ensure the animals’ comfort is non-negotiable, making it a constant and critical expense.

Additionally, the economic downturn has affected everyone’s disposable income, impacting donations and support from the community, although people are still doing their best to help.

Creative Fundraising Efforts

Bristol ARC has witnessed a 24% increase in animal intake from last year, bringing in approximately 300 animals over the past year. Despite these challenges, the centre remains steadfast in its commitment to helping animals.

Rosie emphasized the importance of making fundraising enjoyable. The center has organized various events to engage the community and raise funds. One such event is the ‘Barc Out Loud’ comedy night at Dareshack on October 25. Another initiative is The Great Rescue Bake Off, running from October 24 to November 10, aimed at raising both awareness and funds for the center.

As an RSPCA centre, Bristol ARC allocates space for animals brought in by inspectors and holds a contract with Bristol City Council to accommodate stray dogs, requiring them to maintain specific kennel spaces.

The Rising Trend of Pet Abandonment

The increase in stray animals can be attributed to the economic struggles faced by owners. Many people find it challenging to cover basic pet care expenses amid the cost of living crisis. The RSPCA advises those struggling to afford pet food to seek assistance from pet food banks.

“We are aware of numerous reports studying the reasons behind pet abandonment, with the cost of living crisis ranking highly,” said Rosie. This troubling trend further complicates the mission of rescue centres like Bristol ARC.

Despite these adversities, Bristol ARC remains dedicated to providing the necessary care and support for animals in need, encouraging the community to participate in their fundraising efforts to ensure they can continue their mission.
