Britain is on the verge of experiencing its first wintery weather of the season, with an Arctic blast expected to send temperatures plummeting across the country. Following a warm end to August, the mercury is set to take a dramatic dive, potentially reaching near-freezing levels.
Stark Temperature Changes Across the UK
Recent data from WXCharts, based on MetDesk information, indicates a sharp and sudden temperature drop. By Thursday, September 12, Scotland and Northern Ireland could see temperatures as low as 1°C, a stark contrast to the 27°C heatwave just days prior.
England isn’t spared either, with Manchester expecting a similar drop to around 1°C, and Wales seeing temperatures fall to 3°C. Meanwhile, southern cities like London and Norwich will experience milder drops, with forecasts suggesting temperatures between 5°C and 6°C, a significant change from the recent highs.
Contrasting Weather Conditions
Despite the cold front’s arrival, not all regions will see such significant temperature changes. In Newcastle, for example, temperatures will remain relatively moderate at 12°C, showcasing the varied impact of the cold blast across the UK.
The WXCharts predictions signal a notable turnaround from the weather forecast for the preceding weekend. Northern regions are set to enjoy pleasant weather, while the south grapples with heavy rain and potential thunderstorms, according to Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert. He emphasized the possibility of “repeated areas of rain” affecting southern Britain, potentially leading to localised impacts over the weekend.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain, with the possibility of additional warnings as conditions develop. In contrast, high pressure over northern regions will bring warmer and sunnier conditions to parts of western Scotland, while eastern areas may remain cooler and cloudier due to North Sea winds.
As the first hints of winter take hold, it’s clear that Brits need to prepare for a dramatic shift in weather, with temperatures poised to drop and varied conditions expected across the country.
