Cristiano Ronaldo has struck out at Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, alleging that the Dutchman’s mentality is hampering the club’s chances of success. The 39-year-old football icon returned to Old Trafford at the start of the 2022-23 season but his second spell ended abruptly due to his omission from Ten Hag’s plans.

Ronaldo’s Initial Criticisms

After his move to Al Nassr in January 2023, Ronaldo did not mince his words when reflecting on his time at Old Trafford. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner criticized Ten Hag during a Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast interview, suggesting that the Dutchman’s outlook compromises United’s ability to compete at the highest levels.

“To prove that I’m right or wrong, this is not my issue anymore. I say what I have to say and for me it’s done,” Ronaldo expressed, later adding, “Manchester, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion. The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the League and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the League or Champions League. You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try. You have to try.”

Stormy Relations at Old Trafford

Ronaldo’s second spell at Manchester United ended bitterly. It was marked by several contentious moments, including an incident where he was made to train with the under-21s following his storm-off during a match against Tottenham Hotspur. This saw Ronaldo being benched for the subsequent game against Chelsea, after which Ten Hag used a pre-match press conference to call out Ronaldo’s behavior.

“He also has to be aware that you always get judged by the moment and how you are acting today,” Ten Hag stated. “Especially in top sport, it is about today. It is not about age or reputation. When you are in top sport you get judged by the moment and how you act; that’s normal. We have to be aware of that – everyone, not only Cristiano, as a team, as a manager and as a club.”

This disciplinary action became a turning point, with Ronaldo playing only two more Premier League matches before his exit to Saudi Arabia.

The feud between Ronaldo and Ten Hag underscores deeper issues within Manchester United as they navigate managerial and player dynamics in a bid to return to their former glory. It also raises questions about leadership styles and the long-term vision of the club.

Fans and pundits alike have weighed in heavily on both sides, debating whether Ten Hag’s no-nonsense approach is what’s needed to steer the club or if Ronaldo’s criticism points to larger systemic issues that need immediate attention.

As Manchester United progresses through the current season, eyes will be on Ten Hag’s strategies and decisions, while memories of Ronaldo’s blunt critique linger in the background. The unfolding drama could shape the future of the club’s league and Champions League ambitions.
